The ground game was motoring away in Lincolnshire Friday night.

No. 17 Stevenson (1-1) rebounded from a Week 1 loss with a 17-15 victory over No. 23 Glenbrook South (1-1).

Even with temperatures soaring, Patriots coach Bill McNamara was thinking about being in a different atmosphere.

“It was a good performance for both teams,” said McNamara. “It’s a hot and humid day and it was a very physical football game. Our team was physical and played hard and it was a good four-quarter football game; it was like a playoff game out here.”

Using five different running backs, Stevenson rushed for 261 yards on 43 carries.

Senior Kevin Foley and junior Chris Peters were the two top backs of the game.

Foley opened up the scoring on the first drive with a 16-yard touchdown run en route to his 81 yards on 12 carries.

Peters handled the ball as many times as his Stevenson teammate, finishing the evening with 83 yards, which included a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:14 left to put his team up 17-7.

“We ran hard,” said Peters. “All week, the backs’ legs were nonstop and we just ran hard.”

The Titans countered with an 18-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mac Zabriskie to senior receiver Sully Stadler early in the fourth and a 6-yard Sean Christ touchdown run with :06 remaining, but it was not enough.

Next, the Patriots will host Zion-Benton, while Glenbrook South will travel to Northbrook to take on district rival Glenbrook North.
