Paul Preston ran 13 times for 231 yards and scored four touchdowns in Maine South's 55-16 win over Glenbrook South on Friday in Glenview.
The Hawks' sixth win in a row qualifies them for the state playoffs and puts them in the driver's seat to win the CSL South championship once again.
"Offensively, we knew we could score, but I was proud of the way we played defense," said Maine South coach Dave Inserra, who improved to 49-0 in league games since taking over for Phil Hopkins in 2001. "I thought it would be a little more of a track meet."
Glenbrook South led 14-13 early in the second quarter after Kyle Kwasniewski scored on a one-yard run to cap a 15-play scoring drive covered 84 yards.
But Preston, who started the game's scoring on a 60-yard run on the first play from scrimmage, added his second TD on the next possession.
The Titans (5-3, 3-1) threatened to tie the score when they got the ball, but Will Krug intercepted a pass in the end zone.
"I credit the defensive line for putting pressure on the quarterback," Krug said. "That allowed me to peel back and make the play."
Maine South, which was penalized 11 times in the first half and gave up a safety on a holding call in the end zone, owned the second half.
Sophomore quarterback Matt Alviti connected with Luke Mottley on an 88-yard TD pass, and the Hawks (6-2, 4-0) raced past the Titans (5-3, 3-2).
"We have really good chemistry after working all summer together," Mottley said about Alviti, who went 11-for-19 for 272 yards and passed for two TDs.
Mottley finished with three catches for 131 yards, while Scott Derrick caught four passes for 94 yards and a touchdown. Both players had blocks down field that also led to touchdowns.
"The coaches get on us if we don't block," Mottley said.
Glenbrook South got off to a good start. John Strickland's returned a fumble he forced 11 yards for a touchdown to the tie the score at 7-all. But the Titans couldn't match the Hawks for very long.
Strickland finished with 16 carries for 128 yards.
Maine South closes out the season next week against New Trier. Glenbrook South ends the regular season against Evanston.
