Maine South was able to knock down shots from the perimeter early in Friday night’s contest against Glenbrook South, and it paid dividends for the Hawks in the second half.
While the Titans were concerned with taking away the long-distance threat, Maine South pounded the ball inside after the intermission and cruised to a 57-42 Central Suburban South victory in Glenview.
Matt Lahey got things rolling for the Hawks (15-10, 4-4), hitting three of his four three-pointers in the first half, when Maine South took a 27-19 lead. Lahey finished with a game-high 20 points, including a steal and a breakaway bucket at the end of the third quarter to give the Hawks a 42-30 margin.
“Originally, we were trying to get it inside-out, but it worked out the opposite way,” explained Lahey. “So me making a couple (shots) really opened it up for the big guys in the second half. I like to make the first couple, it really gets my confidence up. It was a good game.”
Junior forward John Solari took control in the third period, controlling the paint and knocking down five baskets. He hit 8 of 14 shot attempts to total 17 points and pulled down seven rebounds.
Glenbrook South cut the deficit to 37-30 in the third quarter on a basket by Justin Busiel, but it was as close as the Titans (5-15, 1-6) would get the rest of the way. Busiel, a junior, was the only Glenbrook South player to click for double figures, finishing with 15 points on 6 of 9 shooting.
The teams traded leads in the first quarter, but Maine South took the lead for good when the Titans missed five straight shots to start the second quarter.
“At the end of the day, you have to be able to knock down shots,” said Glenbrook South coach Scott Nemecek. “At the end of the day, I am sure their shooting percentage was higher than ours from the arc.”
Jamie Nikitas had nine points for Glenbrook South, while junior Ose Ilenikhena came off the bench to collect nine tallies.
Point guard Nick Calabrese (4 points, 5 assists) had nine rebounds for Maine South, while Frank Dounis scored all eight of his points in the second half. The Hawks lead ballooned to 18 points in the closing minutes on a late basket by Mike Miller.
