The University of Virginia will lose one offensive tackle in the NFL Draft April 25, but hopes to gain a future standout since Glenbrook South's Sean Cascarano was expected to sign a letter of intent Wednesday.
Cascarano would love to follow the route of current star, Eugene Moore, who is projected as the No. 2 overall pick by the NFL in the Feb. 2 edition of Sporting News.
"Monroe is a really good player," Cascarano said "He'll be the top draft pick among offensive linemen. That's certainly good to know for an offensive lineman, setting up to be a member of the NFL."
Cascarano, a 6-foot-6, 270-pound senior, is ranked No. 101 nationally by Scout.com and gave a verbal commitment to Virginia June 17 after attending its Junior Day. Cascarano received nearly a dozen offers, but chose Virginia over Michigan State, Colorado and Illinois.
"Overall, I liked the atmosphere. There are great people over there," said Cascarano, who hopes to study business. "I liked the academics and the football."
The Cavaliers went 5-7 in 2008 under coach Al Groh. Cascarano becomes the third Division I signee in Glenbrook South coach Mike Noll's five years, following Mike Nabolotny (Illinois) in 2004 and Sean Progar (Northern Illinois) in 2007.
Cascarano is the only player from Illinois expected to sign with the Cavs. He is one of three offensive linemen committed to Virginia, along with Oday Aboushi (6-6, 305) of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Luke Bowanko (6-6, 260) of Clifton, Va.
The only other Chicago area players currently on Virginia's roster are defensive end Matt Conrath of St. Rita and wide receiver Patch Duda of New Trier.
