Trevor Ponticelli kept Glenbrook North’s playoff hopes alive with a pair of clutch catches.
The senior’s 43-yard reception while lying on the ground set up the second of Curt Petty’s two touchdown passes to Chad Bruce. Ponticelli then returned an interception 62 yards for a score in the fourth quarter to seal a 20-6 win over Niles North on Friday night and snap a three-game skid for the Spartans (2-4, 1-1 Central Suburban North).
“We’ve always been a competitive program from freshman to varsity. We went 8-1 last year so losing three games in a row was a tough feeling to deal with,” Ponticelli said. “We wanted this game so bad.”
Oshayne Brown gave the Vikings (2-4, 1-1) the early lead when he sprinted for a 46-yard score on his team’s first play from scrimmage. He finished with 159 yards on 18 carries.
The Spartans finally got on the board in the second quarter when Petty found a wide-open Bruce on a 46-yard pass. After Ponticelli’s remarkable catch, Bruce caught a 2-yarder in the back of the end zone.
Petty was 7-of-16 for 122 yards but completed five of those passes in a row to end the first half. Kyle Chin had 74 yards on 17 carries while subbing for an injured Grant Rushing.
