Petty passes Glenbrook North to first victory
For the first time in his varsity career, Grant Rushing completed a pass, caught a pass and ran the ball during a game.
But the Glenbrook North junior running back — who also played some safety — was far more excited about how quarterback Curt Petty and the receivers played Friday in Chicago.
The senior signal-caller finished 10-for-15 for 207 yards and three touchdowns as the Spartans earned a 42-12 win over Lane. Chad Bruce caught four balls for 94 yards and two TDs.
“Bruce was a stud,” said Rushing, who ran 20 times for 115 yards and scored three times, highlighted by a 25-yard TD catch on a slant from the slot. “He really wowed me. He and Curt working all game was the key for us.”
After struggling on offense in an opening loss to Hersey, the Spartans got going early with a 10-play scoring drive to start the night that ended with Rushing’s 11-yard run.
“That was a big boost for us,” he said of the sustained scoring series.
Glenbrook North (1-1) led 14-0 at the half, but the game wasn’t that close because the Spartans suffocated the Indians, who totaled nine yards and zero first downs in the first two quarters.
By the time Lane (0-2) got its first first down, Glenbrook North already was up 28-0. The Spartans’ first-teamers made it 35-0 when Petty connected with Bruce on a 40-yard scoring strike 14 seconds into the fourth quarter.
Lane finally managed a lengthy drive, but it was too late to matter. The Indians got into the end zone on Antonio Abreu’s 7-yard TD run with 6:06 to go. The junior ran for 90 of his 99 yards in the second half.
Lane’s final TD came on backup quarterback Ryan McLaughlin’s 63-yard run. s
