Glenbrook North's 'D' stifles Lane

Glenbrook North forced Lane Tech to punt on their first possession

Friday night and that would become a common occurrence as the home

team Spartans shutout out their guests 28-0.

Lane Tech managed only four firstdowns before it began its last

drive with 1:30 to go in the game. The Glenbrook North defense

smothered Lane's complex option offense.

Facing an offense reliant on misdirection and the option, Glenbrook

North's ability to prepare their defense put them in a position to

succeed.

"Our defensive coaches came up with a great plan," Glenbrook North

head coach Bob Pieper said. "We put pressure on them before they got

going."

Glenbrook used both speed and power in their offensive attack. Grant Rushing scored two touchdowns on the ground and

Armin Batang added another.

Quarterback Zack Hilgendorf hooked up with Nick Freund on the biggest

play of the night for the Spartans, a 68-yard touchdown pitch and catch in

the second quarter.

Shutting down the Lane offense and some early scoring kept the home

team fans chanting and cheering for four quarters.

That was important to linebacker Jason Scholl, "We came out to show

the home team crowd that we are a good team and that this is our year."
