Glenbrook North coach Bob Pieper returns five starters, but just one on defense from a team that finished 9-2 last year.
The Spartans have a brutal nonconference schedule and need to be healthy if they hope to contend.
Pieper is looking to left-handed quarterback Tom Coughlin to take them back to the playoffs for the eighth time in the last 10 years. Coughlin (6-2, 165 pounds), who has been impressive in his offseason workouts, will look to hook up with receiver Evan Stamatonkos (6-0, 180).
Linebackers Jon Cornfield (6-0, 200) and Zac Caras (6-2, 230) will be notable players on defense, while kicker Jimmy Schmidt adds a huge dimension to the special teams.
