Girls Gymnastics: Host Glenbard North takes sectional

Through three rotations during Wednesday’s Glenbard North sectional, the host Panthers held a 1.5-point lead over District 87 rival Glenbard West.

DeKalb/Sycamore co-op was also looming just 2.65 points behind the Panthers and were finishing up on floor. On the other side of the gym, the Hilltoppers were wrapping things up on on vault while the Panthers strolled over to uneven bars, their weakest team event.

Amazingly, DeKalb/Sycamore posted a meet-best 37.275 on floor while Glenbard West tallied 36.125 points on vault and the two teams finished tied with 144.875 points. Meanwhile, the Panthers were only midway through their bars routines, needing a 34.650 to surpass the two aforementioned teams.

Calmly, the Panthers did what they needed to do, scoring 36.1 points, including 9.625 via Amanda Quinn’s routine, to win the first sectional hosted at Glenbard North since 1986 with a 146.35.

“We have some good routines but it’s not as good as our other events,” Glenbard North coach Lindsay Schultz said. “It was pretty nerve-wracking, but the girls didn’t know anything about scores. I don’t tell them anything.”

DeKalb/Sycamore and Glenbard West remain alive for an at-large team birth. Their 144.875 points is currently the third highest at-large score. The top four at-large teams advance with only Thursday’s Niles North sectional remaining.

“Every kid fell on beam, which is a bummer, but hopefully they learned from it,” DeKalb/Sycamore coach Andy Morreale said. “We still have a chance. Now we’ll have to wait.”

DeKalb/Scyamore’s Alyssa Lopez won bars with a dazzling 9.875 and took home the all-around crown with a 38.375. Glenbard North’s Amanda Quinn tied Lopez for first on vault with a 9.675 and won floor with another 9.675.

Wheaton Warrenville co-op’s Audrey Channon and Glenbard West’s Missy Guzman tied for first on bars with a 9.475.
