Sami Scroggins acted as a sparkplug but the Naperville North girls volleyball engine was firing on all cylinders on Tuesday.

The Huskies took charge early in both games and rode the work of a variety of hitters to a 25-13, 25-14 DuPage Valley Conference win over Glenbard East.

“As a hitter, my job is to find the shots and talk to our other hitters to encourage them to get kills,” said Scroggins, who put down six kills with authority and flair. “We had good communication on the floor tonight. We all knew where all our teammates were at all times.”

“We set small goals at the beginning of each match,” said Naperville North coach Jen Urban. “We wanted to run different options with serve-receive and free balls and we had that opportunity tonight. We were focused on our offense. Whenever Sami can be effective from the right side, as she was tonight, it helps us tremendously.”

The Huskies (21-6, 10-1) took the lead at 5-4 in the first game and never gave it up as they reeled off runs of six and then five points that put the game out of the Rams’ reach.

In Game 2 the Huskies were ahead from wire to wire as a variety of hitters participated in the attack.

Madison Murphy also had six kills for Naperville North, but right behind was Corinne Gajcak with five and Ashley Crawford and Angela Jurek with four kills apiece.

“It’s important for us to have balance,” Urban said. “All our hitters were on tonight. We’ve seen a lot of improvement since the beginning of the year.”

Setters Emily Kwak with 14 and Christine Wu with 11 shared the assists for the Huskies and libero Colleen Larson was the dig leader with seven.

Meghan Hanewall and Lauren Pusinelli had five kills each for the Rams.

“Naperville North is a great team,” said Glenbard East coach Marci Maier. “They served tough tonight and our serve-receive broke down on us. There are times when the serve-receive was strong and at those times we could put down a lot of balls offensively. But they have a lot of offensive firepower, and they played well tonight.”
