WW South comes back vs Glenbard East

Updated: October 15, 2011 12:27AM

Wheaton Warrenville South scored 34 unanswered points in a come from behind victory against DuPage Valley Conference rival Glenbard East Rams, winning in convincing fashion Friday night, 41-20.

In a surprising move, Tiger coach Ron Muhitch started sophomore quarterback Ryan Graham instead of the usual starting quarterback Thaddeus Armstrong.

However, after spotting the Rams (1-7, 0-6) to a 13-7 lead on an early turnover on a punt, Muhitch decided it was time to put Armstrong back in the game.

“I wanted to see Ryan start to see how he did,” Wheaton coach Ron Muhitch said. “Thaddeus did a good job and brought us back. We had to fight back from behind.”

It didn’t take long for the Wheaton (5-3, 5-1) offense to respond. Armstrong led them on two long drives, the first covering 64 yards over almost six minutes. Nine of the ten plays were runs by senior running back Patrick Garner.

“We wanted to get the run game going,” Armstrong (11-for-18, 133 yards, three touchdowns) said. “The run set up the pass for us. The offensive line played great.”

“This was one of my best games,” said Garner (28 runs, 182 yards, two touchdowns). “A lot of good blocking. Guys made good holes and that kept the offense going. I just followed my guard through the hole.”

The next time the Tigers got the ball, they marched 51 yards on eight plays for a touchdown, making the score 21-13 at the half.

Wheaton opened the second half the same way they ended the first half, completing a 50-yard drive in five plays to go ahead 28-13.

In the fourth quarter, junior running back Brandon Adams (6 runs, 65 yards, touchdown) replaced Garner and continued the good running attack.

“The holes opened up for me,” Adams said. “The blocking was good and I was able to bounce to the outside.”

The Rams didn’t quit. Quarterback Joe Koch (7-for-17, 75 yards) led the Rams on a final 65-yard touchdown drive, with running back Eddie Bostert (seven runs, 52 yards, touchdown) scoring the touchdown with just under two minutes left in the game.

“We competed tonight,” Rams coach John Walters said. “The kids played hard. That’s all you can ask. We played a solid first half. We just couldn’t get the big stop when we needed to. That’s been our problem all year.”
