Geneva bounces back with rout of Streamwood

Geneva bounced back from its loss to rival Batavia last week in a big way Friday, posting a 42-0 win over Streamwood in an Upstate Eight River contest.
The Vikings got to work quickly after a Streamwood three-and-out to start the game, moving 47 yards in seven plays and capping the drive with a 1-yard sneak by quarterback Matt Williams to take a 7-0 lead just four minutes into the game.
Williams would add another score on a 14-yard scamper in the second quarter, and Bobby Hess (5 carries, 84 yards) would find paydirt on a 1-yard blast as Geneva rolled out to a 21-0 lead at the break.
Williams and Hess would each score again in the second half and Parker Woodworth (9 carries, 104 yards) would add a score for Geneva, which finished the night with 524 total yards — including 333 on the ground.
“Everyone contributed, our running game worked like it always does as we came out and pounded it,” said Williams, who threw for 191 yards and rushed for 88. “That opened up the passing game, and we played well. It was a great team win.”
Defensively, Geneva made a point to stop the Sabres running game in hopes it would put pressure on them to throw the football. Streamwood rushed for 117 yards — with Alex Morrow leading the way with 75 yards on 17 carries — but most of them came long after the game was decided.
Quarterback Dalton Lundeen paced the passing game with 76 yards.
“I thought our guys played really well, but (Geneva) is a good program for a reason,” Streamwood coach Cal Cummins said. “We did some positives things and learned something about ourselves, and we learned what you have to do to play four quarters with a team like this.”
The Vikings improved to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in league play while cementing a spot in the state playoffs for the eighth straight season. Streamwood falls to 5-2 and 2-2 and needs a win over either Larkin or Batavia to clinch a playoff spot for the first time since 2002.
