GENEVA -- Freshman Kaitlyn Kanorowski was unbeatable in all four events Tuesday during Geneva's senior night at Mack Olson Gym.

Kanorowski won the all-around with 34.80 points after scoring a 9.0 on the vault, 8.45 on uneven bars, 8.7 on balance beam and 8.65 on floor exercise.

"Kaitlyn's awesome," senior Sara Stuehm said.

"I couldn't do it without the support of my team," Kanorowski said.

The Vikings won the Independent Conference meet by besting Oswego Co-op 132.2-127.65. And they did it without senior leader Sonya Leonard, who broke an ankle in competition Monday night.

Geneva coach Kim Hostman said Leonard was practicing on bars during warm-ups and rolled her ankle.

"I saw her break it," Stuehm said, grimacing. "It hurt to see her break it."

Despite the loss of Leonard, the Vikings continued to polish their routines by tweaking elements and perfecting new moves.

"They're doing really well," Hostman said.

Also moving in the right direction is Oswego.

After missing a few practices and cramming for finals, the Panthers hit the floor running and were able to make up for missed time with stellar performances in each event.

"They did a good job," Oswego coach Sarah Dugan said. "They did what we asked them to do."

In a sport known for classical music, freshman Amy Riger rocked the stands with her Eddie Van Halen guitar riff floor routine, complete with a David Lee Roth-style jump, while sophomore teammate Morgan McKenna wowed the crowd with a techno Irish jig.

"They are both new to the team this year," Dugan said. "And they are looking great."

Junior standout Vicky Hammond placed third on bars.

"We've got just a little bit of tweaks left to do (before hosting a regional Feb. 5)," Dugan said.

Both teams will meet again Jan. 31 at Glenbard South when they battle for the Independent Conference title.

"It was a lot of fun," Stuehm said of her senior night. "I usually just do bars, but it was fun because I got out and did floor and beam. We have been working so hard. I think we are ready to do well (at conference and regionals)." Gymnastics
