Third time's a charm for Barrington
The third time was the charm for Barrington.
In the Mundelein sectional semifinals, the Fillies (21-11) defeated Fremd (25-7) 38-33 in their third meeting of the season.
"We played really well together and we just wanted to leave it all on the floor and have no regrets," said junior guard Nicole Collins.
It was a low-scoring affair in the first half as the teams combined for less than 20 points.
Barrington's zone looked to keep Fremd's scorers out of the paint and it worked in the first 16 minutes with the Vikings scoring just six points.
"They missed some shots, but I thought that was really a result of our defense," said Barrington head coach Babbi Barreiro. "I thought we just did a nice job clamping down and getting good rebounds."
The breakthrough came late in the second quarter with the game tied at six; the Fillies went on a 7-0 to close the half out.
Collins was a big part of it as her two steals and four points grabbed the momentum.
The third period was a stalemate for the two squads and went into an exciting fourth quarter 21-13 Fillies.
Barrington extended its lead to the biggest of the game at 12 before the Vikings made their comeback.
Senior guard Bridget Kubis, who finished with 10 points and six boards, powered Fremd to within four, but senior guard Abby Kirchoff was near perfect from the charity stripe and closed out the victory.
"She's one of the best free throw shooters to come through Barrington and I feel very confident with her shooting," Collins said.
Collins finished with eight points five rebounds and five steals while Kirchoff scored 11 and went 11-for-12 from the free throw line.
The Fillies will continue their postseason run on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. when they take on Zion-Benton in the Mundelein Sectional championship.
"We just need to stay focused and get ready for Zion-Benton," said Collins.
