It was difficult to determine which side of the ball — offensive or defensive — was more dominant when Barrington faced off against Mid-Suburban West foe Fremd on senior night Friday.
The Broncos pieced together long scoring drives on three of their first four possessions and limited Fremd to just one score with less than two minutes remaining in the contest while cruising to a 20-7 victory on Barrington.
“It was a team win, I would not say one side was more dominant (than the other),” said offensive lineman Dan Voltz. “We pride ourselves on running the ball and that was the game plan to just come out and run the ball, run the clock down and let our defense just sit on the sidelines. That is what we did, we executed the game plan, that is what we love to do.”
Barrington (6-2, 3-1) opened the game with a 13-play drive that covered 72 yards and ended with a Mark Bennett 1-yard scoring plunge, followed by a Dan Kubiuk extra-point for a 7-0 lead.
Bennett completed 7-of-13 passes for 84 yards, including four tosses to Sam Handler (56 yards).
The next series for the Broncos chewed up even more time and yardage, as they took 21 plays to cover 84 yards and scored again when Chase Murdock dove over from the 1.
Murdock capped Barrington’s final scoring drive in the third quarter when he concluded a nine-play, 72-yard series with a 3-yard TD run. He finished with 136 yards on 31 carries, including 117 yards before the half.
One of the few blemishes for Barrington was that Murdock was ejected from the contest after a personal foul in the third quarter and will not be able to play in the Broncos’ regular season finale Friday at Schaumburg.
While the Broncos offense was chewing up the clock, keeping possession of the ball for over 16 minutes in the first half, the defense was stifling Fremd (3-5, 1-3) at the same time.
The Vikings managed just 15 rushing yards and only 19 through the air in the first half, when they only had the ball for two series.
“We are so used to being out on the field all the time, it was nice to get on the sidelines and get a breather,” said Barrington linebacker Aaron Foley, who recorded a tackle-for-loss. “So when we went out there, we were fresh and ready to go.”
Fremd managed to find the endzone with just under two minutes left when Sam Beutler tossed a 16-yard TD strike to AJ McGhee. Beutler completed 10-of-17 attempts for 71 yards and also rushed for 27 yards.
“Every team wants a shutout,” Foley said. “And we have not had a shutout this year, so it would have been really nice. A win by 13 points is pretty legitimate in my book, though.”
