Feinstein’s goal lifts Hinsdale Central

Clare Madden’s stunning goal just 11 seconds into the second half should have changed the momentum at Friday’s Class 3A Hinsdale Central Regional final. But it was the host Devils that responded.

Senior Mallory Feinstein scored the game-winning goal in her final appearance at home as fourth-seeded Hinsdale Central defeated fifth-seeded Fenwick 2-1 to win its sixth regional title and third title in the last four years.

The Colorado-bound Madden, who scored her 23rd goal of the season, tied the game at 1-1 off the opening kick after halftime. Her soaring shot from nearly 40 yards out went through the hands of freshman goalkeeper Riley Glenn and the ball trickled over the goal line.

“We’ve had our ups and downs,” Feinstein said. “This is the first senior class in a while that has not won a conference championship. But it’s nice to win a regional championship. Who cares now? We’ll keep going.”

The Devils (11-11-2) with play either top-seeded Lyons (18-4-1) or eighth-seeded Trinity at Tuesday’s York Sectional semifinal.

Lyons defeated Hinsdale Central 2-0 on April 26.

Fenwick (15-8-3) ended a record-setting season. The Friars won their first East Suburban Catholic Conference title and set a school record for wins in a season under first-year coach Robert Watson. The defeat ended the careers for four-year starters Madden and Illinois State-bound defender Mia Patrevito.

“This was an amazing group of girls. We have four to five college players going now,” Watson said.

The Friars managed only two shots in the second half after Madden’s goal. Hinsdale Central defenders stayed with Madden throughout the game. Sophomore Case May was even yellow carded with 2:08 remaining in the game for a body check that sent Madden to the turf near midfield.

“After our [regional] match against Morton, they played De La Salle and afterward a lot of us stayed to watch her play,” May said. “Some of us have played club against her and the coaches know her from previous years.”

On the game-winning goal, Jenn Jarmy weaved her way through the Fenwick defense before passing to Feinstein, who sent a left-footed shot past keeper Sydney Galvez-Daley.

Feinstein assisted on the game’s first goal when Drea Issleib headed-in Feinstein’s corner kick with 6:34 to go in the first half. Madden was limited to only two shots in the first half, three in the game.

“Obviously Hinsdale has a nice team,” Watson said. “I feel like we played better in the second half. We did not do well in the first half. We did not keep our energy level up.”

After Feinstein’s goal, Fenwick’s best opportunity to tie the game came on Patrevito’s shot with 3:40 remaining, but the ball sailed over the goal and hit the football upright.

“We let down [on Fenwick’s goal], but I think the great thing about our team is that we didn’t put our head down,” May said. “We responded with a second goal.”
