Football: Brother Rice blows by Fenwick

Updated: November 12, 2011 10:24PM

Brother Rice got off to a slow start but scored touchdowns on all four possessions of the second quarter en route to a 37-0 shutout over Fenwick in the semifinals of the Catholic League playoffs Saturday in Chicago.

The running back duo of Martez Walker and Andrew Walker carried the load for the Crusaders (8-4), combining for 195 yards and five touchdowns.

Martez Walker (16 carries, 103 yards) rushed for a pair of touchdowns and hauled in an 18-yard pass for a score. Andrew Walker (15 runs, 92 yards) had an 18-yard score on the ground and a 27-yard TD catch.

Both runners hit the 20-touchdown mark on the night, with Martez padding his single-season school record to 22 scores. Andrew Walker has 20 TDs this season.

Brother Rice limited the defending Catholic League champion Friars (4-6) to just 109 total yards. Fenwick didn’t notch a first down until the last play of the first half.

The win was vindication for the Crusaders, who lost to Fenwick in last year’s league playoffs.

Now comes a rematch with Catholic League Blue foe Mount Carmel in next week’s championship game. The Caravan, who walloped Hales 63-7 Friday night, beat Brother Rice in Week 5 of the regular season.

“Now we get another crack at Mount Carmel,” Brother Rice coach Steve Nye said. “It’s great. I told the guys you get to play the greatest game in the world for another week. What’s so bad about that?”
