Fenwick allowed Hales Franciscan to stay a little too close for their quarterback's comfort Sunday at the University of Chicago.

On the first play of the second quarter, Spartans quarterback Christian DeBonnet threw a perfect 27-yard touchdown strike to Christopher Rozier to narrow Fenwick's lead to 14-7.

Fenwick (3-1) responded with a three-touchdown surge in a five-minute stretch of the second quarter and rolled to a 49-13 victory in a Catholic League crossover.

''Once they scored, it fired us up,'' Fenwick junior quarterback Joseph Romano said. ''We started slow and sluggish, and we realized we had to come out and play our game.''

Senior running back Gregory Killingsworth (eight carries, 100 yards) scored on touchdown runs of 18 and 41 yards. Six different Fenwick players scored. Romano threw an 18-yard touchdown to Joe Musso. His backup, Dominick Campagna, pitched a 23-yard touchdown to Alex Furth to propel the Friars to a 35-7 lead at halftime.

Running backs Brett Stelczyk and Jim Delaney each scored on 10-yard rushing touchdowns for the Friars. Phil Gough set up Michael Ember's five-yard burst with a 36-yard punt return. Defensive end Jack Dittmer recorded two sacks and four tackles for loss.

Rodney Jaynes scored on a two-yard run for the Spartans (0-4).
