Owen Williams scored four first-half touchdowns and Lake Forest scored 48 straight points after spotting Fenton an early touchdown as the Scouts flattened the visiting Bison 55-20 in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs on Friday night.

Williams scored on runs of 21, 2, 23 and 13 yards, as the Scouts built a 28-6 halftime lead. He finished the game with 122 yards on 16 carries.

When Matthew Wagener returned an interception 36 yards to the house on the first play of the third quarter, it was 35-6 and game over.

The Scouts added on with a 7-yard touchdown pass from Jordan Beck to Geno Quaid,a 26-yard run by Stephen Cirame that kicked the game into running-clock mode in the third quarter, and a 94-yard touchdown run by Scott Powell with 6:49 left in the game.

Beck was 10-of-14 passing for 115 yards.

Fenton quarterback Joe Butz had an unusual first half, completing 13-of-14 for 119 yards. But the one he didn’t complete was picked off by David Glynn who returned it 11 yards to the Fenton 12 that set up the Scouts’ score that put them ahead for good.

Next week, the Scouts will hit the road for a Round of 16 matchup at unbeaten (10-0) Batavia, who rallied to beat Notre Dame 35-28 on Friday.

“We’ll cross that bridge next week,” said Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli. “Last year, we were in the exact same position. We had to play at the No. 1 seed in the second round (a 28-17 loss to Crystal Lake South) and held strong for three quarters.”

Friday’s performance was dominating on both sides of the ball, and Spagnoli and was pleased with the effort.

“We started slow and gave them one,” he said. “After that, our kids settled down.”

Glynn’s pick when it was a 6-6 game was the momentum-changer.

“It obviously gave a big spark to our team,” Spagnoli said. “It set us up with real good field position (11 yard line) and we scored a couple of plays later.”

Williams was his usual dependable self, putting up big numbers within the framework of the offense.

“I tell everyone he’s the heart and sould of team,” the coach said.

Defensively, Lake Forest allowed Fenton just two yards on 17 rushes in the game.

“We need to tackle better if we want to compete next week,” Spagnoli said, “but overall, I was happy with the way we played.”
