A 29-26 loss to Riverside-Brookfield in Week 9 prevented Fenton from winning a conference title and a playoff berth last year.
With half of his starters back, Bison coach Mark Farrell thinks his club will again challenge for the top spot. Senior quarterback Ricky Prignano (6-1, 180) rushed for eight touchdowns and threw for three in 2007. Punishing senior fullback D.J. Anderson (6-0, 230) can open holes for him, as can all-conference right tackle Francisco Ochoa (6-2, 260), a three-year starter, and returning starting center Benji Sciullo (5-7, 190). Both seniors will also play on the defensive line.
“Hopefully we’ll be able to establish a strong running game and also do a little play-action,” Farrell said. “If you can’t run the football and your defense is on the field a lot, you’re in trouble.”
That was the case at times in 2007, but Farrell hopes the return of junior linebacker Nico Watt (6-1, 195) will change that. Watt missed last year with a torn ACL.
“He will make a big impact,” Farrell said. “Defensively, we’re hoping to be able to be aggressive and take the ball away a little more.”
Senior outside linebacker Carlos Gomez (5-8, 170) brings toughness, as does senior tight end/linebacker Tommy Garza (6-1, 180). Junior defensive backs Mitch Ewert and Eric Justiano could be impact newcomers.
