Richards rolled by Evergreen Park 28-0 Friday at Evergreen Park, remaining the only undefeated team in the South Suburban Red. The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-0) capitalized on Mustang mistakes all game.
"Our defense played well all year and the offense is starting to click," Richards coach Tony Sheehan said. "You have to capitalize on mistakes and luckily they didn't capitalize on our mistakes and our defense held strong."
After an interception late in the first quarter by Richards defensive back Jarrell Williams, Julian Venerable (18 carries, 160 yards, 2 TDs) made it 7-0 Bulldogs four plays later, breaking off a 77-yard touchdown run. Venerable would score again on a nine-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, after Dave Onate (two recovered fumbles, sack) recovered a fumble by Evergreen Park running back Victor Baker, making it 14-0, which held up as the halftime score.
"Every time we get a turnover on defense, I want to get out there right away and just put the other team away," Venerable said.
The Bulldogs had nearly 200 yards rushing in the first half alone behind offensive linemen Frank Bell, Andy Crivellone, Vince Voss, Ryan Gutowski and Phil Cummings.
"I love my offensive line and they've been really stepping it up the last couple of weeks," Venerable said. "I told them if they take care of their blocking, I'll make sure they get fed well."
After two snaps over the head of Evergreen Park quarterback Brandon White moved the Mustangs from their 48-yard line to their 3, Richards got the ball at the Mustang 25 on a punt from the end zone. Cedric Clemons (8-16, 67 yards, TD, 6 carries, 8 yards, TD) would eventually score on a one-yard keeper to make it 21-0 late in the third. Two plays later, Onate recovered another fumble on a lateral by Mustang's quarterback Alex Ortiz, setting up a 17-yard touchdown pass from Clemons to Joe Demarco for a 28-0 lead.
"When I see the ball, I just know I need to get it," Onate said. "We want three more shutouts."
Evergreen Park (4-2, 2-2) finished with 23 yards of total offense and the team's second conference loss in a row.
"We didn't help matters with turnovers," Evergreen Park coach Mike Barry said. "We're 4-2 and we have to move forward and focus on the next team. We are still in the position to make the playoffs."
