New Trier rolls by Evanston

New Trier never is surprised when one of its players post a low score.

With enough good players to field at least two competitive clubs, the Trevians use the regular season to experiment with lineups.

Yet another player stepped up Thursday at Wilmette Golf Club as George Voris posted an even-par 35 to lead New Trier to a 149-164 win over Evanston.

“We have a lot of guys who contribute throughout the season, and (Thursday) was his turn,” said New Trier coach Pete Drevline, whose team improved to 2-0 in the CSL South.

James Hageman’s 36, which featured eight pars and one bogey, headlined Evanston’s foursome.

“He’s been really turning it on lately,” Evanston coach Jed Curtis said of sophomore Hageman. “He just went out there and competed.

“He’s a kid who wants to be a leader and wants to compete at the highest level.”

Austin Rendell, Brian Heck and Thomas Errath all recorded 3-over 38s in the victory.

Two days earlier, the Trevians won Fremd’s invitational at Inverness Country Club. They beat Barrington by two shots with a 313. Glenbrook North, one of the hottest teams in August, finished at the 12-team tournament with a 329.

New Trier’s Fitz Bowen took second place with a 75, while Ian Wright tied for third with a 77.

“That was a nice tournament win for us,” Drevline said. “It’s a good feather in our cap, something we can use as a building block for the rest of the season.”

Oliver Wood and Jackson Mihevc each shot 42 for the Wildkits, while Pat Kleiber came in with a 44.

“We came up short, but we really battled,” Curtis said. “We always look forward to playing New Trier. Hats off to them.”
