Bahr becomes two-way threat in Evanston win
Evanston fell behind early and then dominated as it rolled past Glenbrook North 35-7 on Friday in Evanston.
The Wildkits (3-1) took the lead for good early in the second quarter when Joe Degrand blocked a GBN punt, and linebacker Ray Bahr scooped up the ball and ran it into the end zone, giving the home team a 14-7 advantage.
Running back Bahr (11 carries, 136 yards) then scored two more times before halftime, the second a 65-yard scamper where he broke several tackles and delivered a stiff arm or two.
That score, which came after the Wildkits’ Adonis Dees had picked off a pass, gave Evanston a 28-7 halftime lead.
“I thought we played real physical tonight,” Evanston head coach Mike Burzawa said. “Once again we started off slow, but overall I thought we were physical on both sides of the ball. We tackled well. Ray Bahr ran the ball with a lot of heart.”
Glenbrook North (1-3) recovered its own onside kick on the opening kickoff and drove down for a Grant Rushing 2-yard touchdown. But Rushing was held in check by the Evanston defense.
“We have some guys hurt, but that is no excuse at all. Other guys have to step up,” GBN head coach Bob Pieper said. “Evanston deserves the credit. They physically beat us and they played better than we did. We’re not very good right now. I love these kids, but we’re not playing very well and they need to change something.”
Trailing 7-0, Evanston got back into the game when quarterback Max Block hit Victor Bordo for a 60-yard touchdown. That pair combined again for the team’s last score, a 32-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter.
Evanston opens CSL South play at home next Friday against Glenbrook South. Glenbrook North has its CSL North opener at Deerfield.
