Suffering its first loss of the season last week, the Glenbrook South football team required a confidence builder prior to the regular-season finale at New Trier.
The Titans just needed a few extra minutes to warm up.
Glenbrook South overcame a listless start to record a 55-7 victory over Evanston Saturday afternoon.
The Titans (7-1, 3-1 in Central Suburban South) failed to score on their first two possessions, but netted touchdowns on seven of their next eight drives en route to their second 50-point game in the last three weeks.
“We just wanted to come out strong and not get down on ourselves after our loss last week,” said Glenbrook South receiver Trent Monckton, who caught six passes for 51 yards, including touchdown grabs of eight and two yards.
The Wildkits dropped their fifth straight game to fall to 1-7 overall and 0-4 in the CSS. The 48-point loss equaled Evanston’s biggest loss of the season, a 56-8 defeat to Maine South in Week 5.
The Titans wiped away the frustration from losing to Maine South 30-27 last week with a strong defensive effort and multi-dimensional offense.
The Wildkits had a window of opportunity to pull off an upset, but Glenbrook South’s defense held firm to allow the Titans offense to wake up. The Wildkits were limited to 29 yards of total offense in their first three drives.
Glenbrook South mixed up the pass and run effectively to take control of the game following a slow start. Quarterback Ryan Hopkins shredded Evanston’s defense with short passes, completing 14 of 15 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. Hopkins’ lone mistake was an interception in the first quarter.
The running game helped Hopkins pad his completion percentage numbers. The Titans rushed for 229 yards on 42 carries, with Mike Hirsch finishing with a team-high 17 rushes for 87 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Schroeder carried the ball 13 times for 65 yards and two scores.
The Titans needed a big offensive day to overcome three turnovers and 65 yards in penalties.
“We ran the ball some to cover our mistakes,” Glenbrook South coach Mike Noll said.
The Wildkits scored their lone touchdown on a 13-play drive late in the second quarter. Lacory Cork scored on a 5-yard run to cut the deficit to 12-7 before Glenbrook South embarked on a scoring spree.
The Wildkits committed four turnovers in the second half to allow Glenbrook South to score 43 unanswered points.
“The score wasn’t indicative of the game,” Evanston coach Mike Burzawa said. “We played hard for the whole game. They were able to break open the game.”
