Elk Grove rallies past Buffalo Grove

Updated: September 24, 2011 12:28AM

On a night when Buffalo Grove celebrated the silver anniversary of its state championship, Elk Grove spoiled the party, scoring 17 unanswered points and pulling out a 17-10 victory Friday

‘‘The fact the game started late didn’t phase us at all,’’ said Jeff Miceli (three catches, 50 yards, touchdown).

Miceli’s touchdown reception on the first play of the fourth quarter put the Grenadiers (4-1, 1-0 Mid-Suburban East) ahead 14-10.

‘‘Adam (O’Malley) threw me a perfect pass and led me just right,’’ Miceli said.

O’Malley (8-13, 94 yds), a sophomore, replaced injured starter Dejan Basara.

‘‘I felt like I had a big hole to fill,’’ O’Malley said.

Buffalo Grove (1-4, 0-1) led 10-0 when O’Malley plunged over the goal line from the one-yard line with 25 seconds left in the first half.

Elk Grove was also led by halfback Stefan Skoneczka, who finished with 110 yards on 23 carries.

Alex Fritz (19 carries, 106 yds) scored on a 21-yard run, and Kevin Cho made a 27-yard field goal to stake the Bisons to a 10-0 lead with 3:47 left in the first half.
