Elk Grove's Meyer cool under pressure

Less than three minutes into Friday's contest at Fremd, Elk Grove quarterback Nick Meyer cooly dropped back, sidestepped an oncoming rusher and lofted a deep pass over the defense to Mike Wary, who sprinted into the endzone for a 67-yard touchdown.

With that, the Grenadiers were off and never looked back.

Meyer threw a 12-yard touchdown pass three minutes later and ran for a 16-yard TD as Elk Grove won 29-22.

"(Our receivers) do a good job when I start scrambling of working down field," Meyer said. "Mike Wary does an excellent job. You see him waving downfield and you just give it a toss."

Big plays were the difference for the Grenadiers (2-1). With the score 22-15 early in the fourth and Fremd in Elk Grove territory, the Grenadiers' D stopped the Vikings on back-to-back third-and-short and fourth-and-short run plays.

With the ball back in Elk Grove's possession, Meyer quickly found Wary once again waving his hand deep down the field. The two connected on a 50-yard bomb that would set up Wary's 15-yard touchdown run two plays later.

"You've got to make plays when you get in that situation," Meyer said.

The senior QB finished 10 of 18 for 178 yards and also ran for 95 yards.

The offense was not the only bright spot for the Grenadiers. In addition to the fourth-quarter stops, the Elk Grove defense came up with four interceptions, including three in the first half.

The Vikings (0-3) did what they could to come back, rallying behind the running attack of Justin Wallace, who finished with 133 yards and one touchdown.

But the game came down to big plays. Fremd didn't make them. Elk Grove did.
