EAST CHICAGO -- Due to severe thunderstorms, the 4A Griffith vs. East Chicago Sectional 9 opener was postponed following a three-hour delay.
Mother Nature was uncooperative as lighting strikes lingered around the football field with the teams taking the field on three occasions, only to be instructed to take cover a short time after.
With 30 minutes before the scheduled kickoff, the first lighting strike hit with more following every few minutes.
Each lightning strike caused a 30-minute delay from the time of the strike. The teams came out at 7:40 p.m. only to head right back into the locker rooms five minutes later.
They made another attempt around 8:30 p.m. and warmed up for 25 minutes before being instructed again to take cover.
At 9:22 p.m., with another storm being tracked on weather radar via cell phones, the coaches, athletic directors and officiating crews agreed to postpone the game.
"I'd rather play tonight and I know Russ wants the same thing," EC coach AJ Rodriquez said. "What's important is the safety of the players and making sure no one gets hurt."
Door open at 5 p.m. today with a start time of 6, weather permitting.
