Lake Park gets well at East Aurora

Lake Park came to Aurora on Friday hoping to improve its offensive performance and work on eliminating mistakes.

The Lancers showed strong running and passing performances in the first half against the East Aurora defense and finished with a 49-0 victory.

“The major thing we needed to fix was taking care of the ball,” said Lake Park quarterback Zack Gehant, who threw for two touchdowns on only three pass attempts. “We had lot of fumbles and turnovers last week and I threw four picks. We were more than pleased with our progress.”

Lake Park had first-quarter scoring dashes by Ronald Castaldo (20 yards) and Scott Granfeldt (14 yards). Gehant’s two scoring aerials were to Mike Van Aswogon (37 yards) and Scott Filip (24 yards).

The Lancers (2-4, 1-3 UEC Valley) added on in the second quarter as LaCurt Evans ran one in from three yards, and Tyler Smith raced for 25 yards and a touchdown near the end of the half.

East Aurora, still looking for its first win, added to its troubles by losing fumbles twice in its own territory, and Lake Park capitalized on the field position both times.

The Tomcats drove 62 yards on nine plays right before the intermission, but didn’t convert on fourth down at the Lancer 28.

East quarterback Latrell Lee, making his first varsity start, found Curtis Nelson for 17 yards during the drive and hit Shane McDuffee for 25 more yards.

“The line blocked well and allowed me to step into the throw,” Lee said. “I think I did pretty well for a first start on varsity. I thought it was going to be horrible, but it came out to be pretty good.”

Backup quarterback Mike Korol scampered for a 57-yard touchdown for Lake Park in the fourth quarter. It came on a broken play and was the only score by either team in the second half.
