One team hadn't seen a victory in almost two years, and the other had never won one on the varsity level.
So when East Aurora and Metea Valley met at Roy E. Davis Field Friday night in the Upstate Eight Valley Conference opener, something had to give. On this night, the breakthrough win went to Metea Valley, who made school history by jumping out to a quick lead and rolling to the 39-6 win.
The Mustangs (1-2, 1-0) jumped out to a quick lead when tailback Tre'Sean Mackey scampered in from 14 yards out with 8:36 to go in the first quarter to cap a three-play, 36-yard drive. After East punted the ball away, Mackey scored again on a three-yard run as the first quarter horn sounded to put Metea up 13-0.
Mackey would find the end zone again on the Mustangs' first possession of the second half, scoring on a 33-yard run up the middle to go over the 100-yard mark for the game. That was his last carry of the night, but the junior finished with 103 yards on just 13 carries.
Quarterback Jarrett House also had a short night, but completed seven of his 10 passes for 119 yards and a touchdown. Sam Kim came on to rush for 63 yards in the second half.
The defense also came up big for Metea as they kept Tomcat quarterback Bryan Robinson well in check. Facing pressure all night from the Mustang front, Robinson could only total 65 yards of offense (17 run, 48 pass) before leaving with a left shoulder injury with 5:46 to go in the third quarter.
Metea built up a 39-0 lead but East finally got on the board with 3:06 to go in the game when Charles Pool took a pitch around the right side and flew down the sideline for a 65-yard touchdown run.
East falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play.
