South Elgin’s Xavier Owens will have to make some more room in an already crowded trophy case after winning the 38th annual Charger Invitational hosted by Dundee-Crown at the Randall Oaks Golf Club in West Dundee. After knocking at the door the past two years, including a second place finish two years ago, the senior finally broke through to win it all on Saturday. His even par 71 was two shots better than Bartlett’s Ryan Wolfe, who finished in second with a 73. Nick Robles of Crystal Lake South and Mike Holevas from St Edward, finished three strokes off the the pace. Fremd took home the team title for the third straight year. edging out Geneva 313-319.

For Owens it marked his third tournament win this high school season. He also finished first at the Larkin Invitational and the Geneva Invitational.

“I’m very happy to win this tournament,” said Owens. “There are a lot of good players out here. I”ve just been playing real consistent all year. Nothing really stood out today. I just kept the ball in play and and consistently made some good shots.”

Owens best hole of the day came on the 600 yard par-5 ninth where he was on the green in two and two-putted for a birdie. He also added birdies on his 10th and 13th holes of the day.

Wolfe was in the cluhouse early and was the leader on the board with a 73 until Owens came in around 15 minutes later.

“I was hoping it would hold up,” said Wolfe. “But that’s alright I’m happy for Owen. I’ve known him since I was five. He’s a great golfer. Looking back at it now there were a few shots out there I wish I had back. I didn’t hit the ball real well off the tee, but I played really inside of 150 yards.”

Holevas from St Edward was coming off a first place finish in Rockford last week. He had two birdies but a couple of three putts cost him.

“I didn’t hit the ball off the tee very weell,’ said Holevas. “So I had to scramble to get up and down and save some pars.”

Zach Isoda led the way for Fremd with a 74. Josh Rosenweig and Tom Daddono added 77’s.

“This is always a great tournament for us,” said Fremd coach Josh Teschner. “We play in a lot of tough tournaments beforehand to get us ready. So this is always about the time of year we feel we are hitting our stride.”

Team-wise Bartlett finished fifth overall with a 322 and the storm were seventh with a 327. Jacobs got an 82 from Sean Kozak, Chris Boyle, and Aaaron Traub and finished in eighth.
