Crystal Lake South blows by Dundee-Crown

Crystal Lake South overpowered Dundee-Crown 42-0 in Fox Valley Valley conference play on Friday in Carpentersville. Karl Mikulec (74 yards on three carries) and Zevin Clark (75 yards on seven carries) each scored two touchdowns to lead the Gators.

“We came out to win,” said Mikulec. “We had a great game. We have a balanced offense and we try to move the ball around so people can’t read us.”

It was the Chargers 24th consecutive loss dating back to 2009.

“We played better defense and we’re getting better,” said first year Chargers Coach Vito Andriola. “That was a positive of the game. They’re a better football team than us. Our team is not where we want to be, but we are starting to understand things.”

The Gators (6-1, 4-1) wasted no time to score first. Mikulec scored on a 26-yard run 12 seconds into the game. It was the second play from scrimmage following the opening kickoff.

Mikulec scored his second touchdown of the game on an 18-yard run. Clark followed with two more touchdowns on runs of 10 and nine yards to give the Gators the lead, 28-0 at the half.

The Chargers (0-7) were without starters quarterback Garret Ryan and running back Cody Lane. The injured list grew when T.J. Moss (carry, four yards) went down with an ankle injury early in the first quarter. The offense was left to the only healthy backfield starter, Ardian Asani. The Gator defense held him to six yards rushing on 23 carries for the game.

“We’re getting hurt because we are not strong,” said Andriola. “That’s not going to get fixed in the next two weeks that will be fixed in the next nine months.”

In the third quarter, Gators Josh Beveridge blocked R.J. Schmidt’s punt attempt deep in Charger territory. Reese Dziedzic recovered the loose ball and ran eight yards for the touchdown to make the score 35-0. Austin Fowler 5-for-8 and 89 yards) connected with Brandon Lapak for 56-yard strike and a touchdown to close out the scoring.

“I was worried a little bit,” said Gator Coach Chuck Ahsmann. “We were a little flat following a big loss (to Prairie Ridge 41-16) last week. I was real happy with the way they came in with a business-like approach. That’s what we focused on in practice.”

Quarterback Ben Sprouse has six completions in 12 attempts for 54 yards for the Chargers.
