Streamwood, Lundeen pass by Dundee-Crown

Call it the haunting.
The huge game Streamwood running back Alex Morrow had against Dundee-Crown last year had the attention of the Chargers’ defense, and when Morrow broke off left tackle Friday for a 71-yard toruchown on the Sabres’ third play from scrimmage, the Chargers really braced for an onslaught from Morrow.
Instead the Sabres hit them through the air, with senior quarterback Dalton Lundeen throwing for 251 yards on 12-of-14 passing with three touchdowns in a 40-17 non-conference Streamwood road victory.
“I knew they were going to come (defensively) eight in a box just because Alex had such a big game against them and had that 300-yard game,” Lundeen said. “So we came in here knowing we were going to have to pass the ball to beat them because they were going to come tough.
“It opened up a lot of things just because Alex was so big against them last year.”
Morrow still rushed for 171 yards on 15 carries and had TD runs of 1 and 2 yards following his 71-yard score. But it was Lundeen’s arm that turned it into a rout as the Sabres (2-0) registered their first winning streak since 2003 and handed Dundee-Crown (0-2) its 19th straight defeat.
“We consider ourselves multiple on offense and, like you constantly hear, you take what people give you,” Streamwood coach Cal Cummins said. “And they were shutting some things down. Alex made a couple big runs, but the rest of the time they corralled us.
“So it was a simple matter of they’re going to put too much in one spot, we’ve got to do something else.”
They passed. After Morrow’s score, Lundeen took advantage of a fumble recovery to find Ryan Cook wide open for a 14-yard TD strike and a 13-0 lead.
Morrow’s 1-yard TD run and Nick McGuiggan’s second of four conversion kicks made it 20-3 in the second quarter.
Then Lundeen dropped the bomb. He threw a perfect play-action bomb to wide receiver Blake Holder for a 63-yard TD 5:39 before halftime to make it 27-3.
“When you get Holder out there, especially with play-action, they’re going to have to bite,” Lundeen said. “He’s a track runner, so, I mean, he’s fast enough to beat any of those guys.”
With 16 seconds left in the half, Lundeen’s third TD pass went to Deji Giwa from 18 yards out for a 34-10 edge.
Lundeen finished with 239 yards passing in the first half, then exited in the third quarter with the rest of the starters as Streamwood’s defense kept the Chargers down the rest of the way.
“They’re good team, they’re going in the right direction,” D-C coach Vito Andriola said of the Sabres. “We always give up a big one early and that’s huge.”
D-C did get 88 rushing yards from Cody Lane and 79 from Ardian Asani, but on the scoreboard could muster only T.J. Moss’ second-quarter 41-yard field goal, Lane’s 27-yard second-quarter and 36-yard fourth-quarter TD runs.
“Our defense, I felt, the last two weeks got tired before half, but our defense did do some really sound stuff,” Cummins said. “They caught us on some of those counters, but from an overall perspective the key thing is we’re keeping care of the line of scrimmage. We’ve been solid, maybe not great, but solid.”
D-C gave up 523 total yards of offense.
“Our guys are young,” Andriola said. “All our linebackers are sophomores, and the secondary had a sophomore, and we started a few juniors. But we still expect more even if we are young. We’ve still got to compete.”
