McHenry crushes Dundee-Crown

Updated: March 22, 2011 5:30PM

The McHenry Warriors took control of the game early when Jeff Coy ran the opening kickoff 68 yards down to the Charger 15-yard line. Three plays later Joe Kreig smashed over from the 4-yard line and with only 42 seconds ticked off the clock, McHenry had a 7-0 lead en route to a 57-15 rout of the Chargers of Dundee-Crown.

On their second possession, Dundee-Crown (0-6, 0-2) was denied the tying touchdown when they were called for blocking in the back in the end zone to nullify a 12-yard scoring pass on third-and-goal from their own 12-yard line. After an incomplete pass, Chris Steele drilled a 27-yard field goal with 3:05 to go in the first quarter and narrowed the deficit to 7-3.

McHenry (1-5, 1-1) answered right back driving 50 yards on 8 plays culminating with the first of Joe Kreig's two rushing touchdowns, both from the 4 yard line to give the Warriors a 14-3 lead they never looked back.

McHenry poured in on in the second quarter scoring three more touchdowns to lead 33-3 at the half.

The Chargers made a little noise in the third period by putting together a nine play 79-yard scoring drive to begin the period as Tanner Kotlan found Danny Sharp in the end zone. The point after kick was no good and the Chargers trailed 33-9 with 9:13 to go in the third period.

On McHenry's next possession, Dundee-Crown's Brandon Stone intercepted Warrior Quarterback Robert Tonyan at his own 32-yard line. The drive stalled however when Kotlan was sacked on fourth-and-17 at the McHenry 34-yard line. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty gave the Warriors the ball at their own 49-yard line. Five plays later Tonyan connected with Trevor Jones for a 35-yard score and a lead of 47-9.

On the night, Tonyan completed 23 of 37 attempts for 365 yards and five touchdowns. For the Chargers, Tanner Kotlan was 14 completions in 28 attempts for 236 yards and two touchdowns. On the negative, Kotlan was running for his life all night and was sacked seven times.

"They kicked the stuffing out of us" said Dundee-Crown coach Mike Davis.

In all the Chargers gave up 481 yards to suffer one of their worst defeats in recent years.

"It just wasn't a very good game all around" said Davis.
