Darvell Harris comes up big for Dunbar

Darvell Harris personalized the rout and gave it a distinctly family flavor.

The star Dunbar senior quarterback accounted for five touchdowns, throwing two scoring passes apiece to his brother Travon Harris and his cousin Jayton Dorsey, during the Mighty Men’s 50-0 win over Collins in a first round Public League playoff game Friday at Lane.

“This was a kind of a statement game for us,” Darvell Harris said. “We wanted to make a good showing, not only for the Public League playoffs but the state as well, and hopefully get a higher seed [Saturday].”

Dunbar (6-3) scored on its first four possessions as the Mighty Men seized a 32-0 advantage before Collins recorded a first down. On Dunbar’s opening possession, Darvell Harris orchestrated a six-play, 90-yard drive that he capped with a one-yard keeper.

The big play was a 53-yard strike to his brother Travon and a 25-yard throw to Dorsey.

Darvell Harris connected on touchdown passes of 14 and 30 yards to his brother Travon and seven and 48 yards to Dorsey in helping the Mighty Men (6-3) grab a commanding 38-0 lead at the break.

“It’s great making it about family,” he said. “I definitely know where they are all the time and what they can do out there.”

Darvell Harris (10-21, 262 yards) nearly equated his personal best of six touchdowns. He only played one possession in the second half, where he attempted just one throw. He also got on his brother and cousin for dropping some of his passes.

“He let us know he was disappointed with us,” Dorsey said.

Travon Harris (four catches, 119 yards) and Dorsey (six catches, 143 yards) were the only Dunbar players to record a reception. Both receivers hurt Collins with their ability to gain yardage after the catch. “This is my fourth year of playing with [the Harris brothers],” Dorsey said.

“We try to make the explosive plays, make the catch and don’t get tackled or go down easy.”

Dorset also rushed for 27 yards on three carries. He added a five-yard touchdown run on the opening possession of the third quarter that triggered the running clock.

The Mighty Men also limited the Warriors to just 25 yards total offense in the first half and 79 yards for the game. Collins’ running back Darien Bankhead had 40 yards on 12 carries for the Warriors (5-4).
