UIC head coach Howard Moore and assistant coach Donnie Kirksey stopped by Curie to check in on prize recruit Greg Travis. They were not disappointed as he helped lead the Condors to a 86-54 Red Central win in their conference opener over visiting Dunbar Monday afternoon.
Curie (9-0, 1-0) sank four three-pointers in the first quarter as they built a 23-14 lead.
Then Travis (nine points, eight assists, seven rebounds, five steals) led the charge in the second quarter with two consecutive steals and a layup with 2:53 remaining that allowed the Condors to build a 41-21 lead.
Curie pushed the lead as high as 35 points early in the fourth quarter before coach Mike Oliver turned it over to the bench.
Devin Foster led three players in double figures with 23 points, Paris Burns scored 17 points, and Maurice Flemming had 10 points.
Oliver said when the team plays like this "we'll be hard to beat."
"I think we showed the type of ball we can play when everybody is on the same page. We shot the ball well, we played great defense, and maintained our focus."
Oliver also said he was pleased with the way the team shared the ball.
"We had sixteen assists in the first half, we just played together as a team."
He credited Travis' leadership as the key. "Greg just runs the team, he's a pure point guard and understands he does not have to score in order to make us win."
Jamal Stevens led the Mightymen (1-7, 0-1) with 16 points and William Davis added 12 points.
