Davis, Hyde Park roll by Dunbar

Updated: March 23, 2011 9:38AM

Successful perimeter shooting and controlling Dunbar's second-chance opportunities were the keys for Hyde Park in its 70-52 Red-Central win on Wednesday.

Hyde Park's Marcellis Davis and Deshawn Greer were pivotal in those roles for the Thunderbirds (16-4, 8-1).

"I owe it to my teammates because they really helped me get those open looks from the outside and I was able to hit the shots," said Davis, who scored 15 points.

Davis' points came on five three-pointers. He was able to capitalize on the open perimeter shots he got from the Thunderbirds' ability to break the Dunbar press defense. Greer contributed by grabbing eight rebounds and controlled the defensive glass for the majority the game.

"That's what I'm here for, to grab rebounds and get it to our offensive players," Greer said.

After leading 33-27 at half, Hyde Park came out strong offensively in the third quarter, due in part to coach Lamont Bryant rotating 11 players into the game in the first half. The fresh legs of Thunderbirds carried them to 53-39 lead at the end of the quarter, including a 10-2 run in the final few minutes of the period.

"We had to shake it up and the young guys we brought in played very well," Bryant said.

Bryant's strategy paid off. After turning the ball over 32 times in their last game against Curie, Hyde Park controlled the ball well down the stretch.

"You have to take care of the ball when you play a good team like Hyde Park. But we didn't do that tonight and it was our biggest problem," Dunbar coach

George Montgomery said.

Dejuan Appleberry led Dunbar (3-16, 2-7) with 15 points.
