Rankings aren’t really an issue for Zach Marszal and his Cary-Grove teammates. Instead, the Trojans let their football do the talking.

No. 22 Cary-Grove knocked off No. 4 Lake Zurich 10-7 on Friday night, limiting the host Bears to 146 total yards.

‘‘We try not to pay attention to [rankings],’’ Marszal said. ‘‘We just go out and do our thing.’’

Marszal played a big role in the second half with two interceptions. The first came in the end zone in the third quarter, and the second killed a Lake Zurich drive at the Cary-Grove 14-yard line in the fourth quarter.

‘‘We had great pressure on the quarterback [Steven Kuhn],’’ Marszal said. ‘‘We forced him to throw into some coverages. I just played the ball.’’

Cary-Grove (2-0) dominated in the first half. The Trojans marched 58 yards on their initial drive, picking up a touchdown on a 21-yard reverse pitch to John Pearl.

The lead increased to 10-0 when Josh Buckingham nailed a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the
first half.

Lake Zurich (1-1) came to life in the second half, when it collected 116 of its 146 yards. Kuhn cut the deficit to 10-7 by firing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Markert with 1:14 left in the game.

‘‘The coaches always tell us to play with heart,’’ Markert said. ‘‘We played with heart until the end.’’
