Mustangs' Williams runs over Leyden

Updated: March 22, 2011 4:18PM

Junior tailback Josh Williams rushed for 226 yards on 31 carries Friday

night to lead Downers South to a 41-0 home win over Leyden in a West

Suburban Gold opener for both teams.

The victory was the first of the season for the Mustangs (1-2, 1-0) after

starting the year with nonconference losses to Bolingbrook and Glenbard

West.

Leyden (1-2, 0-1) had difficulty moving the ball in its first two games,

but the Eagles looked as if they would get on the scoreboard first Friday

when they took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards down the field from

their own 20-yard line. Quarterback Joey DiFronzo connected with Mike

Weimerskirch for an apparent 16-yard touchdown, but the played was called

back because of an ineligible receiver downfield. The Eagles failed to get

into the end zone the rest of the game.

Williams rushed 12 times for 79 yards on Downers South's first offensive

possession, setting up a three-yard TD pass from junior quarterback A.J.

Simoncelli to Jordan Hoffman with 21 seconds remaining in the opening

quarter.

The Mustangs increased their halftime advantage to 27-0 on second-quarter

touchdowns passes of 36 and 29 yards from Simoncelli to Marco Scalzetti and

a 13-yard run by Williams.

A 54-yard TD run by Williams on the Mustangs' first possession of the

second half increased the Downers South lead to 34-0. The lead grew to 41-0

on a 15-yard TD run by Hoffman with 4:30 left in the game, setting up a

running clock for the remainder of the contest.
