Williams' effort leads Downers South

Updated: March 22, 2011 4:10PM

Josh Williams rushed for 127 yards and six touchdowns and Bryan Ruggiero led a defense that forced six turnovers to lead host Downers Grove South to a 42-0 homecoming victory over Willowbrook Friday night.

Williams, who had 17 carries before leaving the game one play into the second half, scored on runs of 12, 1, 3, 45, 3 and 17 yards for the Mustangs, who improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in West Suburban Conference Gold Division action. Those touchdown runs came in a span of 11 carries, the last of which triggered a running clock 24 seconds after halftime.

"I did it on the sophomore level my freshman year but to do it again on the varsity level is different," Williams said of his six TDs. "[There] is a lot more meaning to it and it's a great feeling.

"It was real fun. I plan to run hard every play. We were lucky enough to get the ball in short yardage and just punch it in every try."

Willowbrook (1-4, 1-2) started the game by attempting an onside kick, which the Mustangs recovered on their own 49. Downers South then began the rest of their drives in Warriors territory.

Ruggiero, Leo Arvanitakis and Danny Leach had interceptions for South. Arvanitakis also blocked a punt and Ruggiero and Jeremy Ulrich recovered fumbles as the Mustangs allowed just 85 yards of total offense.

"We just prepared well," Ruggiero said. "We keep getting better and better and we hope to continue our success. We've got the train rolling, so we'd love to continue this success."
