Throughout the entire boys' soccer season the Naperville-area schools have been in the spotlight as both local and national press documented their successful seasons.
Then there's Downers Grove South.
The fourth-seeded Mustangs (17-6-2) have quietly put together a nice season and on Oct. 28 their talent shined as they upset top-seeded Naperville Central 1-0 in the third overtime of a Naperville Central Sectional semifinal.
South returns to Naperville on Nov. 1 for the sectional final against fourth-seeded Neuqua Valley at 11 a.m.
Downers Grove South scored the winning goal on a play that looked like Naperville Central had covered.
Cory Martin corralled a long pass from the midfield and after getting a step on it, he hit a high arching cross pass into the box against strong wind.
The ball went over the first wave of attackers leaving an open lane for Naperville Central goalkeeper Tyler Kelley to grab the ball. Kelley went up for the ball but he couldn't bring it in and deflected off of his fingertips and towards the back post.
Tom Kohls' 60-yard sprint towards the back post paid off as he trapped the free ball and calmly kicked it into the back of the net.
"I just hustled down where I needed to be and I guess I was in the right place at the right time. I knew I just needed to be prepared if the ball came to me," Kohls said.
