York blows by Downers North

Updated: October 1, 2011 12:02AM

York’s offense is running like a well-oiled machine no matter who is under center.

The Dukes have been alternating senior Joe Lucca and junior Andrew Iwaszkiewicz at quarterback and both are doing well, as they demonstrated again Friday night.

Lucca completed 13 of 25 passes for 136 yards and three touchdowns, all to different receivers, and rushed seven times for 78 yards and another score, while Iwaszkiewicz threw for one score and ran for another as the Dukes crushed host Downers Grove North 41-0 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division action.

“Right now we’ve got three real special kids that are playing receiver and we’ve got a real good running back and things are going okay for us right now,” York coach Bill Lech said. “I knew what we were fully capable of on offense with those kids. The question was were we going to be able to protect and would we be able to get them the ball.”

The answer to both queries is yes. The Dukes (5-1, 3-0) have scored 249 points and had success behind each quarterback. Lucca has been the starter, but Iwaszkiewicz played the entire game in a 31-8 Week 4 victory over Proviso West as Lucca sat out with a concussion.

Lucca returned to action this week and torched the Trojans (1-5, 0-3) with touchdown passes of 14 yards to Jordan Preuss, 22 yards to Austin Wagner and a one-yarder to Mike Despinich on the final play of the first half that gave York a 27-0 lead.

“It was fun,” said Lucca, who added a 25-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. “We just have great guys outside. We’ve got tall, fast, big receivers on the outside. They help us and then Kenny Boesenberg in the backfield sets up the pass game for us and the line up front did a great job for us.”

Boesenberg rushed 13 times for 134 yards, all but 28 of which came in the second half. Iwaszkiewicz relieved Lucca late in the third quarter and completed 4 of 5 passes for 25 yards, including a four-yard TD toss to Despinich. He capped the scoring with a 68-yard run around right end with 4:27 left in the contest.

“Joe has really come on and Andrew is doing a real nice job of backing him up,” Lech said. “Andrew played the whole game last week because Joe was hurt, but Joe was able to come back and he played real well today. He’s just making the right decisions.

“It’s an opportunity to get them both in. They both take turns all week with the 1s. Joe is fully capable of doing the job, as is Andrew.”

Anthony Rada paced the Trojans with 154 yards on 21 carries but hurt his ankle on the game’s final play.
