De La Salle tough against St Ignatius

Big offensive plays and opportunistic defense keyed De La Salle’s 37-7 win over St. Ignatius at Stagg Stadium Friday.

Sophomore quarterback Shelby Spence (8-for-14, 270 yards, four touchdowns).

“We knew they would key in on Mikale Wilbon (18 carries, 124 yards). We knew the pass would be there,” said Spence.

Spence completed touchdown passes of 71 and 80 yards to Brandon Wright.

“Once I catch the ball in space my goal is to secure the ball and go to the end zone. I expect big plays to be there every week,” said Wright.

The Meteors (3-1) defense was also opportunistic, picking off five passes from St. Ignatius (1-3) quarterback Sam Gutilla.

Norm Cupicciotti returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown.

De La Salle jumped out to a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back.

Gutilla finished 24-42, including a 26-yard touchdown strike to George Doherty.
