After losing to No. 12 De La Salle earlier in the year, St. Joseph inflicted some payback Tuesday night with a 68-61 Catholic North victory over the host Meteors.

“We play good, good teams in the Catholic League,” said St. Joseph forward Reggie Johnson, who finished with 21 points, three assists and three steals. “To be a good team you got to find ways to win.”

Johnson’s three-point play at the end of the third quarter put the Chargers (11-7, 3-3) ahead 48-44. They scored the first 12 points of the fourth period to take a 60-44 lead with under five minutes to play.

The Meteors (13-3, 4-2) closed to within 62-56 on a three-pointer from Marcus White that capped a 12-2 run. White scored a game-high 31 points, including 10 points during the run.

But the Meteors could get no closer.

“When they took the lead in the third quarter we didn’t give up, we came right back. We got great help in the post from Paul Turner and Johnson,” St. Joseph coach Gene Pingatore said.

Turner, a sophomore, scored 15 points in the first half, as the Chargers went into the half with a 35-25 lead.

The Meteors went on a 19-8 run to take a 44-43 lead with 1:30 to go in the third quarter.

“We made several runs at them, but they slowed down our press and made big shots. Their guards did a great job of controlling the tempo of the game,” said Tom White, De La Salle’s head coach.

Alex Foster added 19 points for De La Salle.
