When it comes high-school girls basketball, apparently anything North can do, Central can do one better.
Currently, Grayslake North is working on a school-record nine-game winning streak, that they’ll take into the semifinals of a tourney at McHenry on Wednesday.
At the Warren tourney in Gurnee on Monday, Grayslake Central won its 10th game in a row, dominating Deerfield 43-23 to improve to 10-2 overall and 2-0 in pool play in this event.
Tuesday at 4:30, the Rams and Carmel (2-0) will square off to determine the pool winner.
Monday’s game was over early, as Central led 22-8 at halftime.
Skyler Jessop had 13 points to lead the winners, and Morgan Dahlstrom added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Claire Brennan had nine markers.
“I thought it was a really good defensive effort,” said Rams coach Steve Ikenn. “We held them to eight points in the first half.
“We couldn’t make a shot to save our lives in the third quarter, but the good news was we only gave up five points so we didn’t give up much ground, and the shots started falling in the fourth.”
For Deerfield, Liz Yucknut had 10 points. The Warriors are 0-2 in this tourney and 4-10 overall.
“In terms of performance, maybe we’re a little bit ahead of where I’d hoped we be,” said Ikenn. “We still have a long way to go but I think we’ve made some big strides.
“Defensively, we’re clicking and offensively, we’re starting to move the ball better.”
Carmel 45, Lake Forest 32
The Corsairs (2-0 in the tourney) led 16-0 after one quarter and rolled to an easy win. They will play Grayslake Central in a battle of 2-0 teams on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
Kathleen Felicelli led the winners with 12 points, and Sarah McHugh added eight points and nine rebounds.
For Lake Forest, Mary Striedl had 13 points, Annie Keller 12, and Ali Danneker seven. They were the only players to score for the Scouts (0-2 in the tourney). Lake Forest will play Deerfield at 7:30 on Tuesday night.
Warren 49, Wheeling 35
The Blue Devils bounced back from a disappointing loss to Niles North and are now 1-1 in their own tourney.
Jessica Prince had 23 points and 11 rebounds. Alexis Leneau added 14 points and Amanda Barger had eight points and six assists
The Devils were up 20-9 after one quarter. Warren will play Palatine at 3 on Tuesday afternoon.
