Deerfield played its first game on its new, artificial-turf field on Friday, and the carpet looked very impressive.
But as good as the field looked, Zion-Benton’s football team looked even better.
Winless a year ago, the Zee-Bees opened their 2011 season looking very much like a playoff team as they thumped the Warriors 27-13.
The Bees move up in class next week when they host Evanston.
Keying Friday’s win were Alex Pasiewicz (33 carries, 239 yards, 2 TDs rushing, 1 TD reception), sophomore quarterback Javairius Amos-Mays (3-for-4, 47 yards, 1 TD), Jalen Torres (blocked punt to set up a score) and Jordan Lynch (fumble recovery to set up the final score).
“It feels great. These guys and this coaching staff have worked so hard to get this done,” said third-year coach Bob Strickland. “These guys really responded.
“Yeah, we had some hiccups ... some things we need to work on. But I was proud of our defense, proud of our coaches for getting these kids prepared. When we got on the bus and had our team meeting, it was great to see the kids knowing exactly what they had to do.”
Zion appeared stronger than Deerfield, muscling its way to the surprise win.
“I told them before the game there’s not a kid on Deerfield’s team that weighs more than the telephone poles we were throwing around this summer,” said Strickland. “So, there were no excuses. To see them go out there and just dominate was awesome.”
