The Glenbrook North boys soccer team put up a good battle in Saturday's IHSA Warren Regional final, but was no match for No. 2 seed Deerfield.

The Spartans suffered a 4-0 defeat, ending their season at 10-9-4.

"This is the best Deerfield team they has every had," GBN head coach Paul Vignocchi said. "We tried to stay in the game as long as we could, but our defense broke down a couple of times in the back. We gave up two quick goals and that was the end."

Deerfield midfielder Ben Harris scored a pair of second-half goals to lead the Warriors (18-3-1). Goalie Brent Stabiner earned the shutout as Deerfield advanced to the Libertyville Sectional.

Vignocchi said GBN's season began slowly, but picked up steam as the Spartans headed into the playoffs.

Rugged road

"We had a great year," Vignocchi said. "We competed in every game and we got better as the season wore on.

"We played a difficult schedule and we will have another tough schedule next year."

Glenbrook North will lose 16 seniors, while returning four players with varsity experience.

"We will be young," Vignocchi said. "We will have to replace several good players."

Jordan Silver led the team in scoring with 10 goals, while Adam Franklin and David Knight Johnson each scored five.
