By scoring a touchdown on its opening play from scrimmage, Maine South appeared ready to start its drive for a fourth straight Class 8A title with another decisive victory Saturday at Lane Stadium.
Instead, the Hawks couldn’t make things comfortable in a 35-13 win over Curie until almost midway through the second half.
Maine South (10-0) led by just eight points until the final seconds of the third quarter during its opening-round game. Matt Alviti then gave his team a commanding lead with two of his four touchdown passes.
“We realized that we’ve got to start picking it up or this team could beat us,”
Alviti said. “Curie is a very good football team. They gave it their best, and they had a very good game plan for us.”
The victory was the closest for the Hawks, winners of 22 in a row, since they topped rival New Trier 40-24 on Sept. 23. Maine South had outscored its previous four opponents 197-43.
Alviti was 10 of 20 for 182 yards and ran for another score. Jimmy Frankos had 103 yards and two touchdowns on four receptions.
Frankos caught one of Alviti’s final two touchdowns along with Tyler Fahey and made a 45-yard catch to open the scoring. The Hawks also scored on their second possession with Alviti diving in from 2-yards out.
The Condors (5-5) scored on their first drive as well and had a chance to take a one-point lead early in the second quarter but failed on a two-point conversion attempt.
Kevonta McInytre threw a 17-yard halfback pass to Marcel Poindexter for his team’s first score and later ran for a 6-yard touchdown following a Maine South fumble. McIntyre finished with 109 yards on 28 rushes.
Maine South’s Paul Preston had 70 yards on 10 carries, and John Solari also caught a touchdown pass for the Hawks, who will travel to Stevenson for their next game because of an IHSA penalty restricting it from hosting in the first two rounds.
