Streamwood made enough mistakes on offense and defense in its season-opening game against Crystal Lake South’s girls at the Dundee-Crown tournament that coach George Rosner had to call it a ragged opener.

It was a win, though, as the Sabres relied on the first-half inside play of sophomore center Meghan McGlone and outside shooting of Jessica Cerda to build a big lead before hanging on, 42-36.

“It was a sloppy opening game,” Rosner said. “We’ve got a lot of work to do. We did some things very well and did enough well to get a win.”

It started with McGlone. The 6-footer got inside for 10 of her game-high 14 points in the first half, including eight in the first quarter. She finished with 12 rebounds, two steals, and also deflected two entry passes that caused turnovers.

“She’s a true post player,” Rosner said. “She’s a tough, inside post player, not an average post.

“When we get even more comfortable working with her, she can be really effective.”

Even after McGlone’s big first quarter, the Sabres led just 10-9. Then Cerda, a 5-9 junior, got hot from the outside. She hit three straight shots and 4-of-5 in a span of 2½ minutes midway through the second quarter — including a 3-pointer — and helped turn a 13-11 lead into a 26-12 advantage.

“She got into foul trouble and then got out of rhythm when I had to take her out,” Rosner said about Cerda, who finished with 13 points.

South rallied in the third quarter to get within 32-28 with a 10-point run, but sophomore Holly Foret hit a big 13-foot shot to stem the tide.

“We played good defense except for that one run when they got back into it, then I thought we straightened out the problems we were having,” Rosner said.

Streamwood held South to four points the final 2:50 after the Gators pulled within 40-34.

Guard Amanda Petterson iced the win with a pair of free throws with 41 seconds left after the Gators drew within 40-35.

South had 10 points from post player Kianna Clark.
