Crystal Lake South's Drew Ormseth tossed a pair of touchdown passes. But it was his defensive play late in the fourth quarter that helped the No. 9 Gators hold off Jacobs 28-14 Friday in a Fox Valley Valley contest in Algonquin.

Jacobs had closed to 21-14 and the Golden Eagles had moved the Gators' 30 with just over four minutes to play. On fourth down, Orsmeth, who was just inserted, knocked down a pass at the 1-yard line.

"They usually don't let me play defense," Ormseth said. "I saw their quarterback look our way and I knew the ball was coming."

"He is our next best defensive back," Crystal Lake South coach Chuck Ahsmann said. "We needed him to come up with a play and he did."

Crystal Lake South (6-0, 2-0) jumped to a 14-0 advantage.

The Gators scored on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Ormseth to Kenny King with 9:40 left in the first quarter. Bolek Mikulec then scored on a two-yard run on the first play of the second quarter.

Jacobs (3-3, 0-2) got back into the game when Caz Zyks bolted 57 yards to make it 14-7 with 10:24 left in the first half.

But the Gators came right back. King caught a short pass from Ormseth and turned it into a 68-yard touchdown and Crystal Lake South was on its way.

"It was a quick pass," said King, who had seven receptions for 103 yards. "I get the ball and I see what I can do. It was the most exciting play I ever had."

Jacobs closed to 21-14 late in the third quarter when Zyks (30 carries, 135 yards) scored on a three-yard run to cap 15 play, 65-yard drive.

Jacobs had one final gasp. But Crystal Lake South's Brad Walovitch picked off a pass and returned it 33 yards to seal the victory.
