Boys Basketball: Mark Bennett powers Barrington to victory

Mark Bennett led the way with 23 points and three rebounds as Barrington defeated Crystal Lake South 59-53 Saturday in Barrington.

“I give credit to all my teammates,” Bennett said. “We went out there to win, and it was a team effort to get the job done.”

Broncos forward Brad Zaumseil piled up nine points and two rebounds while John Schneider hauled in four rebounds to go along with 11 points.

“We had a good shooting night,” Barrington coach Bryan Tucker said. “I was proud of the way we shot.”

Barrington (15-7) shot 62.7 percent from the field, including 78.5 percent from the free-throw line. The Gators (6-14) shot 46.1 percent from the field, but nailed six three-pointers.

The Broncos trailed 22-19 at halftime before going on a 23-9 run to take a a 42-31 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Crystal Lake South pulled within three points with a minute left after Matt Benoit hit a 10-foot jumper with 1:09 left. But on a critical possession, the Gators fouled Bronco guard Ryan Carroll who drilled two free throws, putting Barrington up by five.

The Gators would find the bottom of the bucket once more, on a conventional three-point play by Max Meitzler, who had 24 points and two rebounds.
